OKLAHOMA!
OKLAHOMA!
In the decade before
Oklahoma! opened on March 31st
1943 not a single hit show had run for more than 500
performances - Oklahoma! ran for
2,212. The wonderful lyrics and melodies written by Richard
Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein became instant hits and
Oklahoma! became more than a hit,
it became the first real phenomenon in modern Broadway
history.
Oklahoma!
is a simple tale based on a drama written in the thirties by
Lynn Riggs called Green Grow The Lilacs, it tells the story
of Laurey, a winsome yet feisty farm girl who is courted by
two very different men - Curly the brash young cowhand and
Jud Fry a surly, pathological farm hand -
Oklahoma! follows the heart searching of
Laurey and although the road to true love never runs
smoothly with these characters holding the reins, loves
journey becomes as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country
road as she determines to find the man of her dreams.
The romance, music,
dancing and humour of the show underscores the journey of
"Indian Territory" towards progress, community and eventually
to its becoming, in 1907, the 46th state of the Union which
was duly called Oklahoma.
Oklahoma!
has won many awards through the years including a special
Pulitzer Prize and it is still considered the most important
of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals and the single most
influential work in American Musical Theatre. This
outstanding show is guaranteed to give TOpS and our
audiences a wonderful time.
